Life Coaching as Boot Camp
Equating life coaching to Boot Camp may seem odd, but actually, it was at a Boot Camp where the idea struck me as ingenious. Surely this is what was needed for lifestyle success! The principles behind Boot Camp are sound.
The physical exercise on Boot Camp is rigorous, disciplined, full of variety, and the progress is measurable.
It was this extraordinary strategy for fitness improvement that first gave me the idea for life coaching. After weeks of working out, I was struck by the idea that this was essentially what was required for lifestyle success.
What was impressive about Boot Camp was
- The assessment – taking stock of where you’re at.
- Consistent hard, and varied exercising.
- Before each session, there is the record-keeping – weight, blood pressure, measurements, and recorded exercising.
- The strategy is three weeks of five days a week hard exercise, one week of complete rest.
The cycle then repeats itself. The improvement is phenomenal!
If we could apply similar patterns of discipline and determination to our everyday lives, people would be successful beyond their wildest expectations. I began to research and was astounded and delighted to be introduced to the wonderful world of lifestyle coaching. The principles have been tweaked and refined, but the fundamental values of assessing, setting achievable parameters, working for improvement consistently, measuring achievements, and then strategic resting, are the same.
HOW TO GET STARTED
It was early on in my life coaching path that I formulated some important questions. Get started by asking yourself these 11 things:
- Where am I at?
- What is my current reality/context?
- When am I happiest?
- What do I love about my life?
- What do I struggle with?
- Where am I stuck?
- What are my values?
- What are my strengths?
- What do I consider important?
- How can I reach the outcome I’d like?
- What do I need to do, how do I adjust my lifestyle to develop the character traits I value?
Really, the ability to change lies within us. With repeated small decisions and actions to change, it happens. We are amazed at our own inner strength, and that strength is very, very powerful.
